About a month ago Rowan County citizens were welcoming the new year, anxious to put 2020 in the rearview mirror. Many of us secretly hoped that all the problems of 2020 would somehow disseminate and that the new year would usher in lively concerts, bustling weddings, cookouts, and gatherings with friends.

I appreciate the varied species of birds that makes High Rock Lake their home. I marvel at the sheer volume of waterfowl during certain seasons, how they navigate amongst themselves, even in heavy wind, swoop down to grab a fish out of the lake for dinner and stay warm during these cold months.

Known as Spencer Woods to locals, the Fred and Alice Stanback Educational Forest and Nature Preserve is a 42-acre park with 2.5-miles of hiking trails. It’s pet-friendly but leashes are required. It’s great for trail biking and features two wooden shelters and a small pond with floating dock.
