Brittany Chester
Owner, Farmer’s Daughter Organics
Native of Rowan County, NC
Industry: Agriculture
Since farming is in her blood, it makes sense that Brittany Parker Chester has lived and worked the land of Rowan County her entire life. Her roots here run strong and deep as her family has lived in Rowan County for over 100 years. She grew up on the Mary L. Dairy Farm in Mt. Ulla and is now a 6th generation farmer herself. Chester started her own business, Farmer’s Daughter Organics, in 2014 and she maintains not one but two separate organically grown produce farming locations.
Chester offers monthly subscription boxes for her fresh seasonal produce as well as lavender products and tea blends. You may have seen her, her husband Jason, and their two sons set up at the Salisbury Farmer’s Market selling their produce and lavender based products every Saturday morning during the market season. Jason is also heavily involved in agriculture and currently works as the Central Regional Agricultural Education Coordinator for the NC FFA.
A graduate of Catawba College with a degree in Environmental Education. Brittany took her first-hand knowledge of working the land and her college education and has put it to good use. She spent a few years teaching AP Environmental, Biology/Honors Biology, and Forensics at West Rowan High School. She was actively involved with the North Carolina Future Farmers of America during her high school days, was a state FFA officer in college, supervised the group while she was a teacher, and currently serves as the President of the NC FFA Alumni Council. While competing in high school, Chester was a National Gold Finalist for diary production placement proficiency.
Rowan County is filled with various other originals that Chester loves like locally owned restaurants such as Salty Caper and Mambo Grill and unique community events like the Woodleaf Tomato Festival. The Salisbury Farmer’s Market and Catawba College are special places to Chester as are the Rowan County Fairgrounds and Lazy 5 Ranch.
What does it mean to “be an original” in Rowan County? Chester says it’s “being resilient and able to change. Times change, peoples’ interest change. Figuring out how to do what you love (farm) while engaging folks and staying relevant.”
According to Chester, Rowan County is “crammed with folks that care about everyone and can cook like no one’s business.” It has the “prettiest land with breathtaking views of hardworking families who care about the quality of products they produce.” Our county is like nowhere else because of its ideal location between the beautiful NC mountains and the coast. “Its home,” Chester says, “and it’s a place where you can enjoy both the sunrise and sunset and see the stars.”
