Childhood Memories Turned Into Reality
Trent and Ashley Cherry bought a working farm in China Grove to escape the day-to-day grind, and honestly, weren’t sure what to do with it. Neither came from a farming background, so this was a new adventure. They knew that they wanted a special place to spend time with their two children, Nick and Molly. Inspired by his own childhood, Trent decided to build a treehouse, one that the family could spend a lot of time in.
As a member of Team Penske in Mooresville, Trent knew that he would have to build the treehouse quickly, but he wanted it done right. He called in the professionals, Doug Tolson and Johnny Spencer, who flew in from California. Together, the three of them built the 220 square foot treehouse in just 21 days. However, this was no ordinary treehouse. This treehouse sports an 11×13 main room that has a futon, coffee table, window seat, a small fridge, microwave, coffeemaker, and sink. There’s a TV with a DVD player and cable as well as several outlets. The treehouse also has a working shower, toilet, and heating and air conditioning unit. Above the main room is a sleeping loft with a queen-size mattress that holds spectacular views of the nature surrounding it. Off the main room is a spacious deck that Trent built using locally sourced wood. There’s a rope and pulley system for play and on the ground is a fire pit, benches, Adirondack chairs, a swing, corn hole, a giant Jenga set, and a ton of space to just enjoy nature. Lovers of the Salisbury native beverage Cheerwine will especially love the red Cheerwine bench set near the fire pit.
Word spread of the Cherry’s treehouse and soon people wanted to stay for themselves. Trent and his wife Ashley started renting their treehouse for others to use. Soon after, Trent noticed that people were trying to squeeze five to six people in the small treehouse, so he decided to build another, larger treehouse. Thus, a business and legacy began.
A Unique Staycation or Getaway
The Cherry Treesort, as it is now called, has five different treehouses of varying sizes for customers to choose from. Each of the treehouses is named after a different member of the Cherry family. The most recent addition, named after his father, is Chico’s Hideaway, and is located just off the main road with a short walk over a scenic bridge to get to the space. Chico’s Hideaway has a queen-size bed in the main room as well as a queen pullout couch bed and can comfortably hold four people.
The second treehouse, Miss Molly, also holds four people and offers a queen-size bed in the loft and a futon bed in the main living room. Trent named Miss Molly after his daughter, and it was the first treehouse that was built.
Sweet Ashley, named after Ashley Cherry, Trent’s wife, is slightly larger, and can accommodate five people with its queen bed, queen sofa bed, and twin beds in the loft.
Nona’s Nest can also fit five people and features a queen bed in the main bedroom, a pullout couch, and a set of bunk beds. Nona is the Italian word for grandmother and was named after Trent’s mother.
The largest of the Cherry’s treehouses is the Big Nick, which will hold eight people happily and is perfect for larger groups. This treehouse offers three queen-size beds and a futon bed in the main living room. Named after his son, Big Nick is unique in that one of the rooms is located off of the main living room, giving those occupants a little space from their group if desired.
They equip each treehouse with modern amenities, including running water, so you can enjoy the great outdoors without having to “rough it”. All the signs are handmade, and there are intricate bear statues and beautiful birdhouses at every treehouse. Trent said in his interview with Time Warner Cable that, “You don’t have to go three hours away to feel like you’re in the mountains.” In his treesort, you just have to go down the road.
Other than stunning treehouses and a spectacular get-away, Cherry Treesort also offers an event space and event packages for weddings, birthdays, anniversaries, and other exciting party moments. Their location space can hold up to 125 guests, and the packages include the rental of their treehouses, which can hold up to 23 guests overnight. Michelle Kennerly is the Event Manager for Cherry Treesort and can help you with your event. You can find out more information about their events and event packages here.
Come Stay in the Woods
Cherry Treesort is one of Rowan County’s most unique lodging accommodations, and Trent says that it stays busy, especially during the summer. Another busy time of year is when the NC Transportation Museum in Spencer, NC hosts the Polar Express. He says, “Families like to bring their children to the Polar Express and then they come and stay with us.”
Two hundred and ninety-five people have recommended Cherry Treesort on Facebook, and their accommodations have over 480 5-star reviews on Airbnb. Ana on Airbnb said, “Amazing treehouse! Kids really loved it. Great space to hang out; would do it all over again!” Kathryn also chimed in saying, “This treehouse resort is such a unique and wonderful place! Good place to get out in nature! A great place for a unique stay!” Finally, Michele adds, “Clean and neat treehouse. All the fun that the kids want and all the amenities that the adults want. Very fun place to stay! Kids loved it. We will definitely plan a return trip!”
Trent says he has had thousands of testimonials from happy customers, and each treehouse has a guest book where guests can write about their visit. One of the furthest away guests have traveled from was a group from Puerto Rico that said, “My mom, my son, and I flew from PR to see my sister who lives here in NC. We’ve had a great time and I must say staying in the Sweet Ashley has been a great experience. First time making s’mores and it was very fun. Hopefully we will come back!” The Locklears, from Salisbury, were repeat customers and said, “Thank you guys so much! A perfect weekend and get away! See you guys next time! This was our second time staying here.”
When staying, visit the map on the trail and put a pin in the map from where you are from. It’s fun to see where everyone has traveled from!
