Native of Holly Springs, Mississippi

Industry: Music Entertainment/Music Education

Destiny Stone knows exactly what she would recommend that newcomers or visitors to Salisbury/Rowan do before they do anything else. Her parents and siblings live in Mississippi, and when her mother came to visit recently to meet her new grandson, Destiny directed everyone to Bell Tower Green Park. Her mom walked around the park and then got to sightsee in the downtown Salisbury area, Destiny says.

“The park is pretty and my son likes to go there,” says Destiny. “I love the stage and I perform in the Salisbury Reels & Riffs, the movie and entertainment series that Salisbury Parks and Recreation stages at Bell Tower.

Destiny and her husband, barber Daniel King, are parents to Joseph, born in 2022. She also has a stepson, Prince King, a first grader at Overton Elementary in Salisbury. Being a new parent is keeping her busy, but she is dreaming of starting a Blues and Jazz Festival in Rowan. She is from the heart of blues country and wants a revival of a previous Rowan Blues and Jazz Festival in her adopted town. “Blues is the foundation of all American music,” she says.

Destiny came to Rowan County to attend Catawba College on a full scholarship, earning her degree in Popular Music in 2018. She chose to stay here because of the affordability and close proximity to Charlotte and other cities, where she performs.

Her favorite restaurant in Salisbury-Rowan is Morgan Ridge Railwalk Brewery & Eatery because of “the really good appetizers, the laid-back atmosphere, and the option of outdoor seating.”

She supplements her music career with her job teaching music at Knox Middle School. “I’m fortunate,” she says. “Some musicians and songwriters have to pick jobs they don’t enjoy to supplement their income. I enjoy teaching.”

She also enjoys leading worship twice a month at her church, St. Luke Baptist Church on Hawkinstown Road, and working on community events.

Salisbury has a small-town feel but also “a willingness to grow and evolve with modern trends,” she says. “You have the potential to grow your business here if you put yourself in the right places.”

She fits right in with the Rowan County slogan, Be an original.™  “Rowan County has given me opportunities to express myself freely through music and performances,” she says.
