Margaret Young

Marketing Coordinator, Power Curbers Companies, LLC

Native of Rowan County

Industry: Marketing/Manufacturing

Margaret Young chose to live and work in her native Rowan County after graduating college because her friends, family and community are here. “I can’t get that anywhere else in the world,” she says.  “There are plenty of locations that hold a special place in my heart, but nowhere else is home.”

Margaret recently became marketing coordinator at Power Curbers Companies, a  well-known Salisbury-based manufacturer of concrete curbing and paving equipment. After earning Public Relations and Political Science degrees at UNC-Chapel Hill, she was Communications Specialist for the City of Kannapolis for two years. She also earned a minor degree in Philosophy, Politics, and Economics at Carolina.

“Rowan County is so much more than small-town, USA,” she says. “It’s a rapidly growing, diverse community in one of the fastest growing areas of the country. There are a lot of opportunities to thrive here.

“Plus, we have Cheerwine slushies!” she adds, referring to the hometown Cheerwine soft drink company that is a favorite of Rowan Countians.

For a first-time visitor to Rowan County, Margaret would recommend checking out downtown Salisbury with its three theaters, breweries, bars, restaurants, and the new downtown park, Bell Tower Green. It is her favorite outdoor space. “It’s a great and important addition to the community,” she says. “It has given everyone a place to enjoy the outdoors in the downtown area.”

The ’Tis the Season holiday parade, which ends at Bell Tower Green with a Christmas tree lighting, is her favorite event. “ I’ve gone every year since I was a little girl,” she says. “ I always look forward to reuniting with my friends over the holidays.”

Ivan’s, a 30+ year-old seafood and steak restaurant on Old Mocksville Road, is her favorite restaurant. “I love the food and I’ve known the family for a long time. It’s the best place for a nice dinner and a night out.”

Although loyal to Ivan’s, she enjoys venturing out to new restaurants and local businesses with friends, meeting new people, and volunteering in the community. She participates in North Carolina’s Adopt-A-Highway litter program in the East Rowan area.

Margaret, who spent her childhood in eastern Rowan, finds a lot to her liking as an adult in her home county.

“I love the people and sense of community here. Everyone is friendly, and you can tell our residents genuinely care about Rowan County and making it a better place. We are a welcoming, diverse, and supportive community.

“Rowan County is affordable and has great amenities and a strong hometown feel. I enjoy seeing familiar faces, making connections, and running into people I know. It’s nice to be greeted and recognized when shopping at my favorite stores or eating at my favorite restaurants.”

She also likes the mild weather and says, “You can’t beat the location. You can reach Charlotte, Chapel Hill, Raleigh, Winston-Salem, Greensboro, Asheville, Boone, and multiple beaches — all within a short drive. Rowan County is a great place to call home, but it’s also conveniently located if you’d like to take a day trip or weekend away.”

She identifies with the county slogan, Be an Original. To her, it means that “there’s a place for everyone here. We have high-quality amenities for anyone and everyone: parks, restaurants, breweries, theaters, churches, shopping, museums, recreation facilities, and so much more!”
