The Rowan-Salisbury School System (RSS) is excited to welcome Travis Canovai to the district leadership team as the new Director of School Safety and Crisis Management. In this role, Canovai will lead districtwide efforts focused on preparedness, prevention, and response to support safe and secure learning environments for students and staff across RSS.

Canovai brings more than 18 years of experience leading intelligence operations, organizational risk management, emergency preparedness, crisis response, and multi-agency collaboration. He currently serves as a Chief Warrant Officer Three with the United States Navy Reserve, where he has served since 2007. Throughout his military career, he has exemplified executive leadership, supporting senior decision-makers and high-risk operations.

In addition to his military service, Canovai brings more than 22 years of public service with the United States Postal Service, where he has demonstrated a strong commitment to professionalism, accountability, and service to the community.

Canovai’s approach to school safety centers on building trusted relationships, identifying risks early, communicating clearly, and supporting a philosophy that puts people before crisis.

“Every student and staff member deserves to feel safe, supported, and confident in the environment where they learn and work each day,” said Superintendent Dr. Kelly Withers. “Mr. Canovai understands that creating that kind of environment requires more than plans and procedures; it requires listening, trust, and a commitment to the people at the heart of our schools. We are excited to welcome him to RSS.”
