From hiking trails and picnic shelters to playgrounds, campgrounds, and even a carousel, there’s something for everyone to enjoy. Here’s a guide to five of Rowan County’s most beloved outdoor spots — complete with video features so you can take a peek before you plan your visit!

Dan Nicholas Park

For a full day of family fun, Dan Nicholas Park is a must. This beloved destination includes a campground, 10-acre lake, aquarium and nature center, carousel, train, gem mine, and animal habitats. With 17 covered picnic shelters, trails, and plenty of attractions for kids (and kids at heart), there’s no shortage of things to do. Admission is free, with small fees for some activities. Whether you’re fishing at Lake Murtis, taking a paddle boat out, or enjoying the playgrounds, Dan Nicholas Park is an experience to remember.

Dunn’s Mountain Park

Dunn’s Mountain Park is where natural beauty meets sweeping views. A short hike takes you to scenic overlooks of Rowan County’s rolling hills, making it a favorite for nature photographers and families alike. It’s also a geologic and ecological treasure, with unique plants and exposed rock that reflect the county’s landscape history. A great option for an easy “getaway” close to home.

Eagle Point Nature Preserve

If you’re seeking serenity, head to Eagle Point Nature Preserve on High Rock Lake. Spread across 200 acres, this preserve is home to bald eagles, white-tailed deer, wild turkey, and countless native plants. With over three miles of trails — including a tree and plant identification loop and coveside overlooks — Eagle Point is perfect for hiking, birdwatching, and quiet reflection. Seasonal canoe access to the lake adds even more adventure for paddlers. The preserve is open Friday–Sunday throughout the year.

Ellis Park

Just two miles from Salisbury, Ellis Park offers 26 acres of activities for every age. The park features baseball and softball fields, bocce courts, tennis courts, an equestrian riding arena, disc golf, playgrounds (including a fully accessible one), and plenty of trails. It’s also home to Rowan County’s Therapeutic Recreation Division, which provides inclusive programs for individuals with disabilities, and to the Salisbury/Rowan Senior Games & SilverArts. Whether you’re renting a picnic shelter, joining a program, or just spending the day outdoors, Ellis Park is a hub of activity and community connection.

Sloan Park

Nestled in the foothills of the Central Piedmont, Sloan Park is a 100-acre retreat perfect for families, schools, church groups, and anyone looking to slow down. With three miles of trails, five picnic shelters, volleyball courts, a softball diamond, a playground, and even a historic gristmill, it’s the ideal place to mix recreation with relaxation. Open daily, year-round, Sloan Park is truly a peaceful escape.

But wait, there’s more!

These are just a few of Rowan County’s many parks and outdoor spaces. All across the county, you’ll find playgrounds, splash pads, walking trails, and hidden naturescapes — each offering its own way to recharge and reconnect with the outdoors. So grab your sneakers, pack a picnic, and discover the beauty waiting just outside your door.
